Origin & craft
Where the salt comes from and how it is made.
-
Coromandel Sea Salt is a natural New Zealand sea salt made from Coromandel seawater. It is slowly solar-evaporated, hand-harvested in small batches and left unrefined, allowing the natural mineral character of the seawater to remain part of each crystal.
-
Our salt begins its journey in the open Pacific Ocean and the currents that bathe New Zealand’s eastern Coromandel coast. The sea, marine ecosystem, season and weather all influence each harvest, giving the salt a genuine sense of place.
-
Seawater from a remote Coromandel beach is allowed to concentrate gradually as the sun provides warmth and coastal wind carries moisture away. We monitor the developing crystals and harvest them by hand when they reach the right stage—without boiling or chemical refining.
-
They mean the salt has been kept close to its natural state. The crystals are not bleached, boiled, chemically refined or manufactured into perfect uniformity, so some variation in crystal size, colour and moisture is entirely natural.
-
No. Coromandel Sea Salt contains no anti-caking agents, fillers, bleaching agents, added flavours or artificial additives. The ingredient is simply natural sea salt.
Minerals & electrolytes
Measured information, without broad wellness promises.
-
Alongside sodium and chloride, independent analysis has measured naturally occurring magnesium, calcium, potassium and trace elements. These come from the seawater itself; nothing is added to create the mineral profile.
-
Yes. Magnesium occurs naturally in Coromandel seawater and remains present in the finished crystals. Because this is a natural, small-batch product, the measured amount can vary with the seawater, weather, evaporation and point of harvest. Any figure we publish is based on verified laboratory analysis, not a fixed or added formulation.
-
Sodium, chloride, magnesium, calcium and potassium are commonly described as electrolytes when dissolved. Coromandel Sea Salt contains these minerals naturally, but it is not a formulated electrolyte or hydration product.
-
Coromandel Sea Salt offers minimal processing, natural mineral character, distinctive texture and clear provenance. It is still salt and contains sodium, so it should be enjoyed thoughtfully as part of a balanced diet. We prefer to publish measured information rather than make broad health promises. Decide for yourself.
-
Coromandel Sea Salt is not sold as an iodised salt and should not be relied on as a measured source of iodine. If you have been advised to use iodised salt, or have particular dietary or thyroid requirements, follow the guidance of your doctor or dietitian.
Quality & transparency
How natural provenance is supported by verification.
-
Natural provenance is supported by modern verification. Coromandel Sea Salt is independently laboratory analysed to understand its mineral composition and support its product information. We also test for heavy metals and use the results as part of our quality-assurance process.
-
Minerals and trace elements occur naturally throughout the environment, including seawater. Independent testing gives us objective information about what is present and helps confirm that the sea salt meets the standards required for food. It is part of being transparent about a natural product.
-
Many customers these days are have concerns over micro-plastic. We screen all our sea water for all kinds of particles down to 50 microns.
Brands, Comparisons & Awards
How our sister brands and how it compares.
-
Opito Bay Salt Company and Coromandel Sea Salt Company are sister businesses under the same ownership. They share the same commitment to naturally produced, small-batch New Zealand sea salt while serving different customer groups.
-
We created Coromandel Sea Salt Company to make our natural, unflavoured sea salt available to a broader customer groups and to allow us to harvest from a variety of sites across the Coromandel Peninsula.
-
Yes. Coromandel Sea Salt is Opito Bay Salt Company’s multi-award-winning natural sea salt, presented in different packaging under the Coromandel Sea Salt brand.
-
Both can appeal to people who value traditionally harvested, unrefined sea salt with naturally occurring minerals. Celtic Sea Salt is an American brand offering salts from several sources and with different textures and moisture levels. Coromandel Sea Salt is defined by its own origin: New Zealand’s remote Coromandel coast, slow solar evaporation, small-batch hand harvesting and independently measured mineral profile. The better choice is personal and may come down to provenance, flavour and texture.
Using & choosing
Practical guidance for using, storing and choosing.
-
Use it anywhere you would use a good natural sea salt.
-
Keep the pouch sealed in a cool, dry place. Natural clumping can occur because the salt contains no anti-caking agent; simply loosen the crystals with your fingers or a dry spoon.
-
Sea salts high natural mineral content tend to absorb moisture over time. The best remedy to seal the pouch after use. Note the sea salt will still be good to use.
Every pouch contains the same salt: choose 150 g to discover it, 300 g for regular use or 500 g for a well-used pantry staple.
